Cosmetic procedures in your 40s and 50s: Addressing aging while supporting your self-confidence
Continuing our series on common cosmetic procedures at every age, plastic surgeon Steven Schneeberger, MD, offered advice on cosmetic procedures in your 40s and 50s, such as what is most effective for addressing the loss of volume, how menopause and other hormonal changes can affect your skin and more.

What procedures are most effective for addressing volume loss and skin laxity?
“Aging really starts to accelerate in the 40s and 50s, when the face undergoes changes beyond skin laxity. Deep fat pads in the face shift, bone resorption alters your facial structural support and ligaments that once held facial tissues in place start to relax.”
All of these changes contribute to sagging, hollowing and softening of once-sharp contours and features.
Dermal fillers, biostimulatory injectables and fat grafting help restore volume and enhance contours but cannot fully correct the descent of deeper tissues. Noninvasive tightening techniques like radiofrequency or ultrasound-based treatments offer mild improvement, but the gold standard for effective cosmetic procedures in your 40s and 50s remains surgical lifting and tightening.
“Facelifts, neck lifts and eyelid surgery all work to reposition the deeper layers of the face, creating results that nonsurgical methods just can’t match,” said Dr. Schneeberger. “It’s common for people in this age group to look into addressing changes caused by aging throughout their bodies as well.”
Tummy tucks, arm lifts, thigh lifts and breast lifts are all highly effective, removing excess skin, restoring more youthful contours and correcting laxity caused by aging, fluctuations in weight or changes caused by previous pregnancies. These treatments can help to complement facial rejuvenation, creating a harmonious look between face and body.
The ideal combination of treatments depends on the degree of volume loss, the severity of skin laxity and your specific aesthetic goals. The idea is an end result that feels natural, balanced and long-lasting.
How do hormonal changes affect skin and appearance, and what treatments help?
“Perimenopause and menopause bring hormonal shifts that thin the skin, reduce elasticity, increase dryness and change fat distribution,” said Dr. Schneeberger. “These changes often make aging more noticeable.”
Moisture-focused skincare, gentle laser resurfacing, biostimulators and volume restoration with fillers or fat grafting can help counteract these effects. In some cases, medical management of hormones, if directed by a primary care doctor or gynecologist, can support overall skin health.
A combined internal and external strategy often yields the best results.
What’s the difference between surgical and non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation?
“Nonsurgical treatments offer subtle improvements with minimal downtime, making them ideal for early or moderate aging,” said Dr. Schneeberger. “These treatments do require ongoing maintenance and have limitations in correcting significant sagging or deep folds, however.”
Surgical procedures, such as facelifts or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), provide more dramatic and longer-lasting results by physically repositioning tissue rather than temporarily masking changes. While surgery does involve anesthesia, higher cost and a longer recovery period, it remains the most effective option for patients looking for help with deeper structural changes that noninvasive treatments can’t fully address.
How can cosmetic procedures support confidence during midlife transitions?
“Midlife often brings personal and professional shifts that can affect self-image,” said Dr. Schneeberger. “Cosmetic treatments during this time can help individuals feel more aligned with how they perceive themselves, restoring confidence and energy.”
Rather than chasing youth, these procedures can help people feel refreshed, capable and expressive, supporting their sense of identity during a period of change. When approached thoughtfully, cosmetic care becomes a tool for empowerment rather than reinvention.
It’s not about changing who you are, but in feeling more at home in your own skin.
