Enjoying Thanksgiving as a weight loss surgery patient
When people think of Thanksgiving, food is often the first thing that comes to mind. Many who have had weight loss surgery may feel a sense of sadness, as this “eating” holiday approaches.
Marilyn Meade Penrod, RN, said you can enjoy the holiday as well as the food. She offered some suggestions so you can look forward to this day that celebrates being thankful.
Have a plan in place. Eat a healthy breakfast and/or lunch that is rich in protein and bariatric-safe foods before leaving for a gathering. Avoid going to a Thanksgiving meal hungry. This can contribute to overeating and making poor choices.
Scan the buffet or table before getting your plate. Mentally plan which foods are bariatric surgery safe. Thanksgiving meals can offer a variety of vegetables and turkey is a good source of protein.
Prepare a bariatric-safe dish to take along. If you are afraid nothing will be offered that you are able to eat, bring your own dish. Many people are on diet restrictions due to health conditions. More than likely, your host or hostess will not feel offended, and others may also enjoy a healthy dish at the gathering.
Remember the bariatric basics. Chew your food slowly 20–30 times a bite. Putting your utensil down between bites can help you avoid eating too fast.
Avoid alcohol which can lead to dehydration.
Be cautious about trying too many new foods as many may contain hidden sugar that can contribute to dumping syndrome.
Incorporate some kind of exercise into your day. One suggestion could be asking family or friends at the gathering to join you for a walk.
Take precautions to avoid germs. Respiratory illness season is upon us. Continue to practice handwashing and other precautions if you plan to attend a gathering.
Remember why you’re celebrating. The holiday does not have to be all about the food. Take time to journal all that you are thankful for in your life. Count your blessings and share these as a fun group activity with those you love who are sharing this holiday with you!
