How do you know if you have a sinus infection?
Sinus infections can be a miserable experience, but whether or not you have one isn’t always obvious. After all, fevers, a runny nose and headaches can all be symptoms of the common cold or some other viral or bacterial infection. How can you tell if your illness has become a sinus infection?
Katie Whiten, PA, explained how to know if you have a sinus infection, natural remedies to help treat the symptoms and when to see a doctor.
What causes sinus infections?
“Sinus infections are caused by inflammation or irritation, usually due to viruses or bacteria,” said Whiten. “Allergies or even fungi can lead to them, too.”
Your sinuses are spaces within your face that help to keep your nose clean and clear of debris by creating mucus that drains out of your nose. If they become irritated due to allergies or illness, they can get blocked, fill with fluid and develop into a sinus infection, or sinusitis.
How can you tell if you have a sinus infection?
“Symptoms of a sinus infection can be similar to other illnesses. Often, the telltale sign of a sinus infection is going to be significant pressure or pain in the temples and cheeks, where the sinuses are located,” said Whiten.
Other symptoms of a sinus infection include:
- Nasal congestion
- Headache
- Yellow or green discharge from your nose
- Fever
Can natural remedies help with sinusitis?
“Honey is a traditional natural remedy that can definitely help to soothe the symptoms of a sinus infection,” said Whiten. “I’d also recommend nasal sprays, medications like Zyrtec to help with congestion, humidifiers and steamy showers or baths.”
Placing a warm, but not hot, compress over your face can help to soothe your sinuses as well. Just make sure it’s a gentle warmth, not hot enough to burn or cause discomfort. Also make sure you’re well-hydrated and taking in plenty of fluids.
When should you see a doctor about sinusitis?
“If you are experiencing symptoms that keep getting worse or don’t improve after about 10 days, see your provider about other treatment options that can help you recover more quickly,” said Whiten.
