Medical Minute: How to prevent heart disease
Prisma Health’s Medical Minute videos offer bite-sized advice on a variety of health-related topics, from handling the summer heat to prepping for back-to-school and more. In this video, Meghan Businaro, DO, offered ideas on how to prevent heart disease with some simple lifestyle changes.
“Heart disease is 80% preventable,” said Dr. Businaro, “And how you can prevent heart disease is to make sure you know your risk factors.”
Modifiable risk factors, according to Dr. Businaro, include:
- Blood pressure
- Blood sugar
- Cholesterol level
Other risk factors, such as family history, aren’t things you can change, but they are important knowledge to have when considering your risk factors for heart disease overall.
“To prevent heart disease, make sure you know your risk factors, create exercise and activity goals that ensure you get a healthy amount of movement each day and understand the nutrition that will be best for your heart,” said Dr. Businaro.
