What is CAR-T cell therapy?
For decades, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery have laid the groundwork to our approach when battling cancer. However, recent advances in technology offer new hope and a new way of helping our own body take on cancerous cells: CAR-T cell therapy.
Suzanne Fanning, DO and Director of Stem Cell Transplant at Prisma Health Cancer Institute, spoke on CAR-T cell therapy and how it is utilized to treat what are referred to as hematological malignancies: Lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.
These cancers tend to be diagnosed in older populations, and traditional forms of cancer treatment can be exceptionally hard on older bodies.
“The good news about treatment of this patient population is that these advances help patients who are older still receive life-saving therapy with transplantation,” said Dr. Fanning.
In this short video, Dr. Fanning explained how CAR-T cell therapy works to fight certain cancers effectively by using the body’s own immune cells. As well, patient John Ardolino spoke about his own experience after his diagnosis of myeloma.
