How technology helps you manage your diabetes
In this short video, Molly Agostino, NP, with Prisma Health Endocrinology and Thyroid Specialists, spoke on the essential role new technologies can play in helping patients manage diabetes and maintain blood sugar levels throughout their busy days.
Research around diabetes is always evolving, and recently introduced technologies like the continuous glucose monitor (or CGM) can help control diabetes by estimating your glucose level every few minutes, determining trends on blood sugar levels over time.
Readings are conveniently available using either an app on your phone or a Bluetooth-connected device.
Insulin pumps have been available for some time, but advances in technology have made them a great method for controlling diabetes without feeling limited in what you can do. They are connected via a small catheter inserted under the skin, providing a level of continuous basal rate insulin similar to how a naturally functioning pancreas would, or provide extra insulin in case of a need based on your blood sugar readings.
Insulin pumps are usually recommended for those who need to take multiple doses of insulin per day, as it helps them to keep up an active lifestyle.
Diabetic patients interested in possibly using a CGM or insulin pump should speak with their doctor about whether or not this technology would be right for them.
