What does the Prisma Health Mobile Command van do? Let our EMS fleet supervisor explain
Burgess Shucker supervises the fleet of emergency vehicles that Prisma Health maintains and utilizes when providing urgent and emergency care throughout the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.
One thing he’s particularly proud of? The Prisma Health Mobile Command Center, the ambulance strike team vehicle that allows the EMS supervisor to keep an eye on every ambulance in motion during natural disasters, local events like festivals or parades and more.
“Within the van, we have multiple computer options for networks, including monitors along the wall that you can easily hook a laptop into so everyone can see what you see,” said Shucker.
An extra screen allows for a second person to use their own laptop, an ipad offers an ongoing view of all vehicles in use at the time and finally, a fourth screen makes sure the supervisors keep up with the weather, news or other relevant details they need. They can also print, scan, copy or fax if needed from within the command center.
During a natural disaster or event where there is no internet available, redundant systems connect using cell towers. No cell service? Starlink steps in to provide connection then, too. There’s room for two to sleep in the van, if needed, as well as charging ports for digital devices.
In short, the Prisma Health Mobile Command Center isn’t just Burgess Shucker’s pride and joy. It’s a sign that Prisma Health isn’t just here to help after a disaster, but to be there for our community every step of the way.
